EBC: Lukla to Namche Bazar

Trek days 1 and 2

APRIL 6 and 7, 2018.

Lukla airport. Considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world.

 

Day 1: Lukla to Phakding

Journey started morning april 6th. Short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla.
Almost immediately, altitude sickness kicked in at 2800 meters above sea level.
The walk from Lukla to Phakding is only about 3 hours. But weather was rainy and the symptoms of thin air was noticeable.

Day 2: Phakding to Namche Bazar

The second day started without rain from cabin in Phakding.
Already started to see high peaks in the horizon above. Most noticeably the mighty peak called Thamserku which is seen most of the trek. The peak is 6608 masl.

On the way you meet a lot of oxes, called yaks, and mules carrying supplies to villages and hiking expeditions.
Sometimes you hear helicopters flying above you as well.

The journey up to Namche Bazar is a couple of hour longer than previous day.
You pass several villages on the way while you walk along the Dudh Koshi river. Consists mostly of farm land. Several suspension bridges on the way.

Namche Bazar is the biggest village on the way to Everest Base Camp, situated at 3440 meters. The place has several bakeries and lots of shops. Here you can buy clothes and equipment for your trek or climbing expedition.

The village also has the highest and most remote irish pub in the world.
You can also find many lodges for spending the night while you acclimatize.

The most noticeable peak you see at Namche Bazar, beside Thamserku, is Kongde Ri, which lies to the south. The peak is 6187 masl.
